The Technical and Further Education Act 2017 signalled the biggest reform to technical education in a generation. Building on its Post-16 Skills Plan, the Government unveiled an ambitious policy centred around the introduction of a two-year technical programme for young people aged 16-19 called T Levels to sit alongside A Levels and Apprenticeships.
Following an extensive consultation process on the design and roll-out of T Levels, the phased introduction is now almost upon us with the first three subject pathways due to be delivered in September 2020: Construction, Digital, and Education & Childcare. An additional seven T Levels will follow from September 2021, with the remainder to be rolled out from September 2022 onwards. The Government’s current aim is for all T Levels to be introduced by September 2023. To underpin its commitment to T Levels, the Chancellor recently announced an additional £400m boost in 2020-2021 for the post-16 and further education sector, including £25m to support the first T Level providers and ensure their successful delivery in the first year.
As we get closer to the introduction of the first T Levels, this special online national conference will tackle the latest implementation challenges. Vital to the success of T Levels is raising awareness amongst students, teachers, parents and employers to ensure there is enough take-up of the courses. The conference provides an invaluable platform to examine the wider impact of T Levels on the post-16 education pathway and explore how the new framework can transform technical education and vocational skills across the country. In addition to receiving a policy update from the Department for Education, participants will also consider how the T Level roll-out could shape the future curriculum of their school or college.
This live online conference offers a timely opportunity for key partners including FE colleges, schools, local authorities, awarding bodies, training providers and employers to come together to learn, share ideas and explore how they can work in partnership to ensure that T Levels deliver high-quality technical education for every young person from the first year and beyond.
