According to a significant new report by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC), 3,000 crimes of violence against women and girls (VAWG) are recorded each day and one in every twelve women in England and Wales will now experience an incident of male violence, a shocking increase of 37% between 2018 and 2023. The true figures are likely to be much higher, as many incidents remain unreported. As a result, the NPCC has declared this epidemic a national emergency, acknowledging that this growing crisis places immense pressure on the criminal justice system, local services, and third-sector organisations, all of which are struggling to provide victims with the justice they deserve.
Signalling a new determination to confront this issue, the Government has pledged to halving violence against women and girls over the next decade by moving towards a ‘whole-system approach’. This requires collaboration between government departments, local authorities, the police and wider society, working together to prevent, address, and combat VAWG. To underpin this drive, key initiatives are already underway, including the Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs) Pilot, Raneem’s Law, the forthcoming Victims, Courts and Public Protection Bill, and the continuation of Operation Soteria.
This must-attend virtual conference provides a timely opportunity to examine the government’s new strategy for tackling violence against women and girls over the next decade. The conference will explore the next steps required to drive the systemic change needed to improve early interventions, tackle rising misogyny and implement victim-centred schemes. The event will also examine the potential impact of the forthcoming Victims, Courts and Public Protection Bill and pilot of Domestic Abuse Protection Orders (DAPOs) on protecting and supporting victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
