Despite significant progress in recent years, domestic abuse remains one of the most prevalent and harmful crimes, with profound and lasting impacts on victims' physical and mental health, housing, employment, financial security and family life. The publication of the cross-government Freedom from Violence and Abuse Strategy marks a significant shift in the national response, setting an ambitious goal to halve violence against women and girls over the next decade through earlier intervention, stronger protection, the relentless pursuit of perpetrators and improved support for victims.

To underpin this, reforms including the rollout of Domestic Abuse Protection Orders, the implementation of Raneem's Law, reforms to Domestic Abuse Related Death Reviews and expanded investment in perpetrator interventions have begun reshaping the domestic abuse landscape. With the new Burnham Government in place, attention is turning to ensuring these commitments are delivered consistently across the country.

With public bodies under ever greater pressure, it has never been more important for police and local authorities to improve partnership working to identify abuse earlier, share information effectively, deliver trauma-informed services and ensure victims and survivors receive coordinated support while preventing perpetrators from causing further harm.
